Funding

The Trust utilizes two types of funding approaches for projects. The first is “one time” grant funding, and the second is “equity funding”. One-time grant funding is given to organisations eligible for funding. This type of funding is a on time grant with no commitment for further funding from the Trust. The only equirement is that the organisation gives a report on what the funds were utilised for within their organisation.

In selecting deserving organisation and projects, the Trust evaluates applications for funding using the following criteria and process:

  • Focus area of service must be on orphan support and caring
  • At least five years of service
  • Interview and inspection of site completed
  • Proposal submitted by organisation
  • Evaluated by Trustees following recommendation by Project Evaluation Sub-Committee
  • Required report back on grant
  • Organisation is monitored after initial grant is made
  • Monitoring and evaluation undertaken

Equity funding for “Sustainable Development Projects” is given to organisations we are already supporting. The Trust does not get involved with the day-to-day management of these projects but provides equity grants, and where possible appropriate knowledge and experience of Golder people. Although such projects require substantial initial investment, they are intended to become self-funding.

The Trust looks for key elements in Sustainable Development Projects being considered for funding:

  • Are part of an existing organisation
  • Linked to a commercial entity that generates income to contribute to the costs of the facility
  • Supports the connection of orphans to the community
  • Organisation providing a congenial and safe environment
  • Conscious of the need to have access to healthcare, education, counselling and nutritious food and
  • An entity to which Golder staff could contribute with their time and talents

Donations from the Trust should not occur for longer than five years on a specific project.

History

Golder Associates has had a long history of contributing to the well being of the communities in which we live and work.

Soon after the establishment of Golder in Africa in 2003, it was recognised that the AIDS pandemic was wreaking havoc on the healthy development of families and communities all over southern Africa. Golder decided to establish a Trust that would support children who had been orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.

Rather than providing handouts, the guiding principle of the Trust would be to provide funding for sustainable forms of support in communities who had identified long-term development projects that required financial capital and other resources.

Seed funding for the establishment of the Golder Trust for Orphans was committed in August 2003.
